- The Behavior Flexibility Rating Scale (BFRS) and its revision (BFRS-R) are designed to assess a person's ability to respond flexibly to environmental change. We identified and reviewed 15 studies that evaluated/used the BFRS/BFRS-R in research involving individuals with developmental disabilities. Studies were summarized in terms of type/purpose, method, and main findings. Results suggest the BFRS and BFRS-R are sufficiently reliable and valid for assessing behavioral flexibility. Environmental change tended to be relatively more problematic among higher functioning children on the autism spectrum compared to typically developing children and children with other conditions, such as Down syndrome. Behavioral flexibility was positively correlated with executive functioning abilities. A BFRS-R assessment may help to identify environmental scenarios that evoke problem behaviors related to environmental change and might also be considered a potential outcome measure in treatment evaluations. Developing effective interventions to improve behavioral flexibility should be an important future research priority.
