- It is the responsibility of pediatric surgeons and anesthesiologists to accompany children through medical attendance with as little traumatization as possible. Besides side effects, such as vomiting, nausea or excessive sedation, pain is the most important factor affecting in-patient well-being. Hence, it calls for pain reduction with the greatest efficiency during the entire treatment. An optimal pain management can only be achieved by a multidisciplinary approach. Healthcare professionals are of central importance; therefore a concept must be developed which can be performed by the committed nursing staff. Responsibilities must be determined in writing based on an interdisciplinary communication. Assessment and documentation of pain intensity as well as side effects have to be implemented in a standardized way to enable individual management. Simple but effective concepts need to be established to guarantee daily routine practice. Written guidelines and intensive training of the whole medical staff are essential to reach a high level of knowledge. The main aim has to be improving the outcome quality by implementation of a standardized pain management.
