Abstract:
Amblyopia is a developmental deficit of visual acuity, which requires early detection and treatment during sensitive period of visual maturation. Although amblyopia was mentioned 200 years ago, there has been a lively discussion on its treatment in recent years. In 2009 Consilium Strabologicum Austriacum and Orthoptik Austria developed nationalwide recommendations for treatment of amblyopia, which present preferred practice pattern guidelines and no obligatory rules. Early detection of risk factors, early diagnosis, prophylaxis and sufficient treatment are necessary in order to reduce incidence of amblyopia.
