- Abstract:
- Background and Aim: The implantation of a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a therapeutic option for patients with advanced liver disease. However, approximately 20% of patients develop acute heart failure within one year after the procedure. The main cause of death in patients with cirrhosis who have undergone a TIPS procedure is cardiac decompensation. The mechanisms are most likely either the presence of cirrhotic cardiomyopathy and/or volume changes after the TIPS implantation. Additionally, the study seeks to evaluate the efficacy of the Toulouse algorithm as a decision-making tool for risk assessment prior to the TIPS procedure.
