Abstract:

One of the main causes of blindness in developing countries is cataract disease. Many people suffering from this condition have no access to an ophthalmologist and instead continue to rely on traditional healers. As a result, dangerous procedures, such as couching, are still being performed as patients attempt to regain at least some vision. To improve this situation, "Sehen ohne Grenzen," an Austrian non-profit organization, has been performing free cataract surgeries in developing countries for many years. In recent years, these eye camp projects have taken place in Nigeria.
