- Abstract:
- Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in regulating cellular metabolism. The biologically active form, triiodothyronine (T3), promotes gene expression that enhances mitochondrial metabolic processes. Specifically, calcium ions (Ca2+) are essential for the function of dehydrogenases in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, which is critical for mitochondrial respiration. This study investigates the impact of T3 on mitochondrial calcium ([Ca2+]mito) homeostasis, mitochondrial ATP production ([ATP]mito), and cell proliferation in HeLa cervix carcinoma and MCF7 breast cancer cells.
