Abstract:
Congenital toxoplasmosis is a severe disease in the newborn, which can occur after an acute infection with the parasite T.gondii during pregnancy. For the concerned patients and their families this diagnosis might have serious consequences. In Austria routine testing for toxoplasmosis is part of the screening program during pregnancy. This provides an early detection of seroconversion during pregnancy and appropriate initiation of prenatal therapy, which may prevent mother-to-child transmission and minimize harm on the fetus. Aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the screening-program and to register/determine the prevalence of congenital toxoplasmosis over the time period from 2004 to 2012.
