Abstract:
Background. We describe a 16-year-old girl with postthrombotic syndrome and ulcus cruris on her left lower leg. Because of a preductal coarctation she had undergone cardiac catheterization at the age of one week and eleven months respectively via a cutdown of her right and left saphenous vein. No immediate signs of phlebothrombosis had been observed at that time.Case report. When the patient was 16 years old, she suffered from postthrombotic syndrome and developed an ulcus cruris on her left lower leg. Phlebography showed a complete occlusion of the left femoral vein at a length of 3 cm. Hereditary thrombophila was excluded by normal coagulation tests and negative family history. The girl had only a primary varicosis in the hollows of both knees.Discussion. Our case suggests that an asymptomatic thrombotic occlusion of a leg after cardiac catheterization in the first year of life can cause postthrombotic syndrome with ulcus cruris after more than one and a half decade.
