Abstract:: : From a personality dynamics perspective, motives underly individual patterns of experience and behavior and ultimately psychopathological symptoms. Emerging from a psychodynamic view, we outline a current understanding of motivational conflict based on the operationalized psychodynamic diagnosis (OPD) system and highlight its role for the understanding and treatment of psychopathology. Clinical examples show that the same psychopathological symptoms can be related to different motivational underpinnings (equifinality), necessitating different treatment strategies. Conversely, empirical research shows that similar motivational conflicts can be associated with different trait and symptom patterns (multifinality), with psychodynamic concepts contributing to the explanation of seemingly contradictory findings. Integrating etiological theorizing with empirical-quantitative methodology holds great potential for both sides. We close with clinical implications, particularly regarding the empirically based role of insight into one's motives and conflicts and their manifestation in interpersonal relationships as a therapeutic factor. Zusammenfassung: Die psychodynamische Theorie hebt Motive als & auml;tiologische Faktoren menschlichen Erlebens und Verhaltens hervor und betont die Rolle motivationaler Konflikte, die aus inneren Strebungen entstehen. Wir geben einen & Uuml;berblick & uuml;ber das gegenw & auml;rtige Verst & auml;ndnis motivationaler Konflikte auf Basis der Operationalisierten Psychodynamischen Diagnostik (OPD) als gemeinsamen Nenner verschiedener psychodynamischer Ans & auml;tze. Klinische Beispiele zeigen, dass dieselben psychopathologischen Symptome auf unterschiedliche motivationale Grundlagen zur & uuml;ckgef & uuml;hrt werden k & ouml;nnen (& Auml;quifinalit & auml;t), was unterschiedliche Behandlungsstrategien erfordert. Umgekehrt zeigt sich in empirischer Forschung, dass & auml;hnliche motivationale Konflikte mit unterschiedlichen Pers & ouml;nlichkeits- und Symptomprofilen einhergehen k & ouml;nnen (Multifinalit & auml;t), wobei psychodynamische Konzepte zur Erkl & auml;rung scheinbar widerspr & uuml;chlicher Befunde beitragen k & ouml;nnen. Die Zusammenf & uuml;hrung & auml;tiologischer Theoriebildung mit empirisch-quantitativer Forschungsmethodik birgt hierbei beidseitig gro ss es Potential. Wir schlie ss en mit therapeutischen Implikationen, insbesondere in Bezug auf die empirisch basierte Rolle von Einsicht in die eigenen Motive und Motivationskonflikte und deren interpersonelle Manifestationen als therapeutischen Faktor.
