Exploring the Cellular Signal Cascade incuced by Sphingosine-1-Phosphate in Osteoarthritis Chondrocytes
- Abstract
- The aim of the project is to characterise the cellular signalling pathway by which sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) inibits the transcription of degradative enzymes in chondrocytes. Based on preliminary data and the literature we hypothesize that S1P performs this action via the gene product of PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10). This protein is well characterized as a tumour suppressor, bu has so far not been implicated in Osteoarthritis (OA). Therefore this study will identify new potential drug targets in OA and will add to our understanding of the disease process.
