Brainstorming of Lipases

Abstract
Lipases, in concert with lipid kinases and phosphatases, act on maintaining a delicate balance of body lipids. These enzymes catalyze the hydrolysis of ester bonds in lipid substrates and are involved in diverse biological processes ranging from metabolism of dietary triglycerides to cell signalling and inflammation. A diverse array with a still unknown number of genetically distinct lipolytic enzymes is found in nature.
The central nervous system (CNS) contains a high amount of lipid, exceeded only by adipose tissue. Brain lipids, showing unique structural diversity, provide structural integrity to membranes, as well as insulation and an energy source to neuronal cells.
Therefore, investigating lipases in the CNS and the multiple pathways they are involved, is important to extend our current understanding on how brain lipid metabolism is determined by lipases and may contribute to the improvement and development of new therapies against lipid-related diseases of the CNS.
Using a genome-based approach, this Pilot project aims at identifying novel lipolytic enzymes in the brain and to investigate the role of known lipases in brain lipid catabolism.
