Mission Statement
The Division of Gynecology is a center for the treatment of benign and malignant conditions of the female genital tract and breast. With the Division of Medical Gynecologic Oncology, we follow international protocols for treating women with cancer of the breast or the genital tract. The divisions are organized for comprehensive and integrated care of women with cancer. Interdisciplinary cooperation amongst critical care specialists, general surgeons, urologists, plastic surgeons and gynecologic surgeons is intended to provide optimal surgical care. Women who need chemotherapy after surgery receive it in the same building. Ancilliary care includes clinical psychologists and physical therapists.
Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women. The care of women with breast disease is organized so that as much as possible of the diagnostic work-up, surgery and postoperative care is under one roof. Surgical options for many women with breast cancer include breast preservation, reconstructive procedures and sentinel lymph node biopsy.
Operations for incontinence and pelvic floor disorders are amongst the most commonly performed gynecologic procedures. Patients are evaluated thoroughly before and after surgery, both with a regard to anatomical and functional outcomes and quality-of-life.
Endoscopic surgery (e.g., laparoscopy) is a standard approach for gynecologic surgery. About 500 endoscopic procedures are performed per year.
Special outpatient clinics address specific problems. Patients with dysplastic lesions of the cervix and vulva are seen by specialists in the field. Women with incontinence or other pelvic floor disorders are offered conservative treatment options with specialized physical therapists and dieticians. Common and rare pediatric gynecologic disorders are seen and treated in a special clinic in conjunction with pediatricians. The outpatient breast service specializes in the integrated evaluation of women with breast lesions. A special outpatient clinic -- one of the first of its kind in Europe -- is dedicated to the follow-up of patients after treatment for cancer.
As part of the Medical University of Graz, the Division of Gynecology is active in clinical and basic science research in relation to gynecology and gynecologic oncology.
