Abstract:
One of the most vision threatening complications of exsudative age-related macular degneration (AMD) are submacular hemorrhages. The aim of this study was to investigate the difference in the incidence of submacular hemorrhages between laser photocoagulation, photodynamic therapy with verteporfin (PDT) and Anti-VEGF-therapy of treated and untreated cases. We reviewed 4367 patients diagnosed with exsudative AMD regarding the appearance of submacular hemorrhages (99 patients) during the years 1997-2012. There was a significantly higher occurrence of submacular hemorrhage (OR 1959) in patients without therapy than in treated patients. There was, however, no significant difference between the three therapeutic options in regard to the incidence of submacular hemorrhages. The risk of submacular hemorrhage after therapeutic intervention is significantly lower than in patients with AMD without treatment. However, an Anti-VEGF therapy cannot prevent submacular hemorrhage.
