Abstract:
Pediatric patients with malignant soft tissue or bone tumors of the extremities pose a challenge to the physicians in charge. Surgical management includes resection of the malignant tumor with sufficient safety margins and reconstruction of the defect. This can be extremely demanding because ideally the extremity should be preserved and simultaneously a good functional outcome should be achieved. Surgical techniques and procedures using megaprostheses or biological reconstruction have improved over the last two decades, nevertheless, the choice of treatment should be focused on the expectations of the patient and family. This article presents a summary of the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors in pediatric patients as well as some pros and cons of the various surgical procedures.
