Abstract:
Intestinal obstruction in childhood occurs as a result of a wide range of pathologic processes. Congenital or acquired pathologies may be the cause. Biliary vomiting is the leading symptom of intestinal obstruction below the level of the papilla of vater and urges prompt diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making. In the presence of intestinal ischemia, timely diagnosis is required for bowel- or even lifesaving procedures. Patient age, medical history and thorough examination may lead to the cause of intestinal obstruction in childhood. In the majority of cases, correct diagnosis can be established with the help of abdominal ultrasound examination and abdominal plain film. Contrast studies of the upper gastrointestinal tract depict the level of obstruction. Cross-sectional imaging modalities are reserved for special cases. In this first part we present a straightforward approach to correct diagnosis and treatment in patients with intestinal obstruction and bowel ischemia.
