Accidents during childhood are common and may lead to permanent disability or even death. By consistent education, individual analysis of the circumstances of the accident and a direct influence of the involved environment, a 50% reduction of the incidence of accidents involving children is possible. In order to achieve this reduction a close cooperation of parents, children and medical personnel plays a pivotal role. Preventive education can be done within the framework of "Mutter-Kind-Pass" (Mother-child pass) examinations or bedside counseling directly following an accident. This approach uses a phase of increased sensitivity to the issue of accident prevention. The effort of improving childhood accident prevention is extensive, however, considering the financial burden for the healthcare system, a possible permanent disability and the psychosocial impact for the parents, this effort is justified. This can be supported by the results of numerous international studies.
