Abstract:
Background Although it is known that choroidal melanomas can develop from pre-existing benign choroidal nevi, there is no screening program in Austria for melanocytic lesions of the choroid until today. Data on demographic and clinical factors regarding the Austrian population are sparse; a registry collecting the data of affected patients has not been established. Methods and patients The aim of the study is to develop a prospective registry for recording and monitoring demographic and clinical data of patients with choroidal nevi and indeterminate melanocytic lesions of the choroid. Results Both the large number of participants, as well as a long observation time allow a detailed study of the natural development of choroidal nevi and suspicious indeterminate melanocytic lesions. The project focuses on the identification of risk factors for growth, malignant transformation and need for treatment. Further it helps gathering information on the ophthalmologic supply of patients with choroidal nevi and indeterminate melanocytic lesions. Conclusion The project PROCHORN analyzes risk factors for the development of uveal melanoma and helps evaluating the usefulness of a screening program for choroidal nevi in ophthalmologic examinations in Austria.
