Did the profile of the age of cataract patients change within the last 14 years? An analysis of 76,760 phacoemulsifications.

The prognosis of the growth of population shows an obvious increase of the elderly people in Europe. This will go hand in hand with an increase of the incidence of cataracts as a sign of aging of the human lens. It was of interest, how the profiles of the age of patients operated with phacoemusification might have changed within the last 14 years in Styria. We extracted all surgery files of patients with phacoemulsification from our common database of the hospitals in Graz and Bruck/Mur of the years 1997-2010. The profiles of frequency distribution graphs were compared to each other and to the population statistics. We analyzed 76,760 files of phacoemulsifications from the years 1997-2010, 51.5 % of the patients were female, 48.5 % male. The mean age at time of the surgery was 74.7 years (minimum 74.1 in 2000, maximum 75.1 in 2007). There was no obvious trend in any direction. The frequency distribution graphs showed a main peak. A second peak of very old patients (83 years of age) diminished by time in the earlier years, but a new peak of younger patients (67 years of age) came up in the latter years. The growth of the older population caused an increase of the total amount of phacoemulsifications (+ 128 %) and within certain periods of life (< 45 years + 68 %, 45-59 years + 182 %, 60-74 years + 108 % and > 75 years + 139 %, respectively). Our results of the analyses of the age distribution profiles over 14 years of phacoemulsifications showed a stable mean of about 74.5 years and a very pronounced increase in the age periods of 45-59 and > 75 years (more than doubling). The cause might be a distinct desire for a good vision in the years before retirement and the quite good physical condition of the very elderly. Our profiles might be of interest for further analyses of the future of eye care.
