Quality of life and body-images in choroidal melanoma patients.

Abstract:: Background Biopsychosocial aspects are clinically and psychologically important in the treatment of malignant diseases. This study focused on the question how different forms of treatment of choroidal melanomas (radiotherapy versus primary enucleation) may influence quality of life and body-image of the patients. Essential differences could be helpful for treatment planning. Methods and patients The study was carried out on 20 patients (14 radiotherapy, 6 enucleations) before and three months after therapy at the Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University Graz, Austria. Several questionnaires were administered to patients and they were interviewed twice. Results Results showed an interaction between physical und psychological wellbeing between the two groups. The radiation group showed an increase of their psychological wellbeing after therapy, but enucleated patients showed a decrease of psychological wellbeing. In regard to physical wellbeing, results demonstrated an opposite effect. In this case enucleated persons had a better constitution after therapy in comparison to the radiation group. Results concerning body image illustrated that persons who got a radiation treatment seemed to have lower joy over their appearance than enucleated persons. Conclusion Both groups stated high satisfaction with therapy and appearance after treatment. Our findings concerning life quality and body image of uveal melanoma patient help ophthalmic oncologists improve treatment planning and post-operative care.
