- Abstract:
- Expert opinions about prescribing spectacles for infants and subsequent guidelines differ significantly; hence, it is often difficult to develop general indications for when to prescribe spectacles. Moreover, the consequences of refractive errors vary greatly among individuals, which is why an individual assessment and decision, taking into account other relevant parameters, is necessary. Guidelines may thus only function as an aid to orientation. In 2010 the Consilium Strabologicum Austriacum and Orthoptik Austria published recommendations for the prescription of spectacles for infants without any ophthalmological problems in Austria. The aim of this guideline is the best possible prevention, or the earliest possible therapy of amblyopia and strabism.
