Mission Statement

Diseases of the brain, the spinal cord, the peripheral nervous system, and the muscle can lead to numerous conditions and symptoms including headache, back pain, sensory and motor disturbances, movement disorders or seizures, but also impairment of speech, sight, cognition and memory. From this range of diverse neurologic disorders, the Division of General Neurology cares primarily for patients suffering from cerebrovascular diseases (e.g. stroke) and immune-mediated disorders (e.g. multiple sclerosis). Special emphasis is also placed on the treatment of tumours of the brain and the spinal cord (neuro-oncology) and of diseases of the peripheral nervous system and the musculature. Embedded in the University Hospital of Graz, the Division of General Neurology offers patient care that is optimised both by the proximity of other relevant and related disciplines and by its own facilities such as a stroke unit, neurophysiological and neuroimmunological laboratories, and outpatient services supported by a dedicated and competent team of neurologists, nurses and other medical care professionals. Research for the benefit of our patients is a further priority ranging from basic experimental research to clinical application. These research activities and especially the participation in controlled clinical trials allow us to implement novel diagnostic and therapeutic tools prior to their official registration. In this context, close cooperation on the local and international level, on the one hand, and both teamwork and each individual¿s input, as well as high-standard training for our students and clinical personnel, on the other hand, are a prerequisite for success.
